Since the late nineties, the brothers Andi and Hannes Teichmann have played an integral role in Berlin's cultural life as electronic musicians, DJs, label owners, and cultural activists. The two have deeply influenced the DIY culture of the early Berlin scene with its constant search for diversity and its playful delight in improvisation and transformation. Their curiosity often leads them to points of intersection with other cultures and musics. They have worked together with musicians of various traditions in many African and Asian countries, and engaged in intergenerational collaborations with Christian Burchard, Robyn Schulkowsky, and Schulkowsky’s father Uli, among others. As project initiators and organisers they have realised various projects together with the Goethe-Institut, including TEN CITIES, BLNRB, and the »soundcamp« format, which has been taking place since 2012 in Sri Lanka, Mexico, and Pakistan and which led to the formation of the ensembles Karachi Files and Moon Machine. The Teichmanns’ label NOLAND, which was started in 2015, traces and consolidates their path from underground to interground over the course of the last decade.
Gebrüder Teichmann on Facebook»Border Movement«
Pop culture thrives on cultural exchange, and Pop-Kultur has dedicated itself to that exchange. Every now and then, though, we still need a bit of help, and Border Movement is the ideal resource. The Berlin-based platform, supported by the Goethe Institut since 2012, sees itself as a »cultural catalyst« and, as such, values interactions—especially those between Germany and the South Asia region. At Club 23, on two different festival days, the activist and journalist Sarah Chawla (New Delhi, India) and the musician Mohammed Manal (Malé, Maldives) among others will represent the bandwidth of Border Movement’s work with concerts, DJ sets, and talks. The Berlin artists Anika, Andreas Spechtl, Dan Bodan, and most recently She's Drunk have all participated in the exchange programme, and now the Pakistani artist Natasha Humera Ejaz aka Stupid Happiness Theory will come to the German capital from Islamabad. We should and must mix things up!
