Some people need an entire lifetime to tell a story; Ava Bonam just needs her piano. On her website, the Berlin resident greets visitors with the statement »I’m nothing but music and I can and want to be nothing else«. Her self-produced debut album »MAYA« is a testament to this existential passion. She herself cites Tori Amos and Marissa Nadler as two reference points for her own creations. As her heroines do, Bonam unites difficult themes with light melodies that hearken back, on the one hand, to the rich tradition of folk music, and on the other hand embark into uncharted, experimental territory. Bonam’s voice floats on top, fitting perfectly with the dynamic instrumental play and telling mesmerizing stories via little means. Each song is a life of its own.
