A few punks and industrial-heads load into a school bus and drive into the desert. Sound like the beginnings of a bad joke? Well, we’re pleased to announce that in the eighties it was a reality. In the documentary »Desolation Center«, director Stuart Swezey revisits a festival that took place in the Mojave Desert in 1983 and where bands such as Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and Einstürzende Neubauten came to a minimalist musical consensus amidst dust, explosions, and political frustration. This was before glamping and after Woodstock pathos—instead there were lots of megawatts and a sheet or two of LSD. For a few days, the claustrophobia of the urban jungle was dissolved into a desert utopia. Sounding less and less like a joke and more and more like a good idea? You got it—and today more than ever.
