Ebow’s second album is called »Komplexität«, and we can’t conceive of a bolder declaration of war upon the German rap game. The brains behind the project is Ebru Düzgün, a Vienna-residing Bavarian. As one-third of the Gaddafi Gals, she takes machos outside, and as the voice of as the mouthpiece of Ebow, she channels 2Pac, M.I.A., Rio Reiser, and Cem Karaca. Düzgün once said that German rap should be more feminist, more queer, more experimental, and more courageous. And she plays by those rules exactly—over beats inscribed with her Turkish descent and whose toughness is real toughness. She commands: »I'm soft, enjoy it.« And if softness comes out of your mouth, it should come from your heart and from your mind as well. In »Punani Power«, Düzgün poses as a street-style Frida Kahlo and delivers better subtitles than the lion’s share of street-rapper do punchlines. Could Agit rap be a thing? Ebow is, at least, and we should all be grateful for that.
