Pop culture is often marketed to us as an emancipatory victory/achievement, as something bringing us closer together and giving a voice to social movements. However, cultural appropriation, whitewashing, exclusion, and sexism still persevere in the business around it and the discussions about it. Who gains access, who is given credit? Who is granted acceptance, exposure and—let’s not forget about this—money? In this talk, Hengameh Yaghoobifarah, Ebru Düzgün aka Ebow, and Yeşim Duman discuss the state of queerness, questions of ›race‹, and the situation of female-identifying artists in contemporary pop. Yaghoobifarah is a journalist, speaker, fashion blogger, and columnist for the German newspaper taz as well as a freelance editor for MISSY magazine and taz. Düzgün is a German-Turkish rapper who will also perform solo at Pop-Kultur as Ebow and as part of the trio Gaddafi Gals. And Duman is not only a radio presenter and resident DJ at Hamburg’s Golden Pudel Club, but also the organiser of the queer party series bubble and Erdogay.

»Pop-Hayat«

»Hayat« means life. In this programme, curator Yesim Duman, a Golden Pudel resident, ByteFM presenter, activist, and organiser who helped plan some of the events in Pop-Kultur’s programme last year, condenses her involvement in the queer club scene and the post-migrant discourse into one series, bringing artists from various genders and races onto the stages and behind the scenes of the Pop-Kultur Festival. It will include the film »Silvana«, a documentary about the Swedish rapper Silvana Imam, discussions with the author Fatma Aydemir, the rapper Lady Bitch Ray, MISSY journalist Hengameh Yaghoobifarah, and the artist Ebru Düzgün aka Ebow, as well as Nachwuchs workshops on gender equality with Lady Bitch Ray and Caren Miesenberger and, of course, the festival's final club night featuring BEARCAT and KILLA. Hayat, life, should be enjoyed in all of its facets.
