Malik Djoudi could probably sing the imprint of his own homepage and it would sound more urgent than the most lachrymose Jacques Brel number. The son of Algerian and Vietnamese parents, Djoudi first wrote songs in English for bands like Moon Pallas and Kim Tim before deciding to return to French as a universal musical language when he launched his solo career last year with the release of the LP »Un«. Djoudi’s voice is as simultaneously ambivalent and clear as Nico Päffgen’s, but it settles about two octaves higher. Added to the mix is a synth-pop sound that bears the mark of the French Touch and reflects Djoudi's obvious love for Kim Wilde, whose song »Cambodia« is part of his live repertoire. Bittersweet, fun—this can only be French.
