When Myrkur debuted in 2014 on the American metal giant Relapse, great excitement followed. Her sound, which channeled the second wave of black metal and combined Nordic folk elements with healthy doses of fury, was classic and contemporary, subtle and gargantuan. But she didn’t leave it at that, and not by a long shot—Amalie Bruun wanted to stir up more than just the ingredients of an everyday recipe. The Dane regularly revisits the roots of black metal to gather new ideas. Restrained arrangements for choirs, ambient sound experiments, and folk are as integral to her sound concept as are references to Norse mythology and traditional instruments from the Scandinavian region. The results are as compelling in their quietest moments as they are when the amps are turned all the way up, and the live LP »Mausoleum« is an impressive testament to this. The excited around Myrkur has not faded—only turned into enthusiasm. And rightly so.
