At a certain point, Oasis wanted to start a UK revolution from bed; in the video for »Baby Luv«, Nilüfer Yanya manages to start one from an air mattress. Q: What do you get when an early musical education consists of Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, and the Pixies, and when a university sends out two different letters of rejection at the same time? A: Wonderfully unique indie-pop-rock that travels the path of greatest resistance via the simplest means. The Londoner started out large: she already introduced her style as an opener for Broken Social Scene. Yanya doesn’t care much for details— although her lyrics address the everyday clusterfuck, they also always zoom out and examine the largest-scale evils at hand. What other emerging indie stars are traveling to Greece to work in refugee camps? Exactly. We can’t think of anything more cutting-edge than starting the revolution from the water.
