In both literature and in rap, sometimes only direct and uncomfortable words can help against German conservatism. In her debut novel »Ellbogen«, journalist and writer Fatma Aydemir tells the story of 17-year-old Hazal Akgündüz, alienated from Germany and a foreigner in Turkey. For more than a decade, Reyhan Şahin aka Lady Bitch Ray has been working between provocation and scholasticism as both a rapper and a researcher. Both of them use their work to process their experiences as Turkish-born women and the anger they feel as a result of their conditions. As a musical genre, hip hop has always challenged the state of affairs, but not infrequently, problems can became more solidified as a result. In this opening talk, Şahin and Aydemir will speak together with Pop Hayat curator Yeşim Duman about the language of rap and about rap as a language, but above all about uncomfortable conditions—in rap, literature, and far beyond.

»Pop-Hayat«

»Hayat« means life. In this programme, curator Yeşim Duman, a Golden Pudel resident, ByteFM presenter, female:pressure activist, and organiser of the two event series bubble and Erdogay, creates a »bubble« in which for the liveliness of her magic, and of her questions, to unfold. In this project, Duman, who helped plan some of the events in Pop-Kultur's programme last year, condenses her involvement in the queer club scene and the post-migrant discourse, bringing artists from various genders and races onto the stages and behind the scenes of the Pop-Kultur Festival. It will include the film »Shakedown«, made exclusively by and for the black lesbian community in LA, discussions with the director Leilah Weinraub, the author Fatma Aydemir, the rapper Lady Bitch Ray, MISSY journalist Hengameh Yaghoobifarah, and the artist Ebru Düzgün aka Ebow, as well as and Nachwuchs workshops on gender equality with Lady Bitch Ray and Caren Miesenberger. Hayat, life, should be enjoyed in all of its facets. And where is that more likely to happen than in the installation »T-Unlimited - the Pop Hayat Çaystube« by the Berlin artist Nuray Demir?
